A Spectator’s Guide to the WikiLeaks Thriller

Written by jeremy on Wednesday, 15 of December , 2010 at 5:31 pm

I’ve been riveted to the ongoing Julian Assange and Wikileaks saga.  As a broadcaster on a public radio station, and as such, a member of the press, I think there are huge issues here far beyond the trumped up charges he might be held on in a British prison, if he’d as yet been charged with anything.  He’s just being held.

There’s SO much information about this out there it’s hard to dig through, so here’s a digest of some articles I’ve found that seem to voice the issues clearly.  I’ll add to it as I find additional resources. (Read more…)

Special Today: Blackened Gulf Shrimp

Written by jeremy on Wednesday, 9 of June , 2010 at 2:57 pm

As appalled as we all are about BP’s Deep Horizon oil platform blowout in the Gulf, it’s hard to get any kind of grip on all these numbers… lots of zeroes and sometimes gallons, sometimes barrels, mostly low-ball numbers.  I decided to find a few things to compare them to so I had a range of scales for comparison.  (Read more…)

Planets in Motion

Written by jeremy on Sunday, 18 of April , 2010 at 7:05 pm

We are watching astrological history unfold around us, and it is seldom so easy to watch the play if you know the players.  Whether you believe in astrology or not, check this out for a viewpoint that’s worth considering.  I made it as painless as possible for a long tome.  😉

AirCheck 020910

Written by jeremy on Tuesday, 9 of February , 2010 at 10:42 am

Other than the hour and a quarter’s worth of new European material, this edition of AirCheck is playtime, a chance to go back and hit some of the things that have only been played on one show and deserve more, and some that have been there so long they’ve been forgotten.

Here are some of the artists I looked up for whatever reason: (Read more…)

AirCheck 011210

Written by jeremy on Monday, 11 of January , 2010 at 5:45 pm

After all the time devoted to the year-end EuroChart reviews, I am so ready for some new music.  It’s been three weeks since I sought out new tunes, so there’s a lot of new music.  I doubt I’ll play anything old unless it was preempted by the season.  (Read more…)

AirCheck 121509

Written by jeremy on Tuesday, 15 of December , 2009 at 10:37 am

This week’s AirCheck is all Europe again.

As another year draws to a close, artists all over Europe have released their latest, hopefully CD-sales-inspiring, singles. With all of our time devoted to getting ready to go live on the FM dial, and being out of our studio while it’s remodeled, the past couple weeks things have mounted up, so there’s a ton of new music. As usual this is my worksheet, so not everything will be covered… just artists I needed to remember. The nice part of it is that WordPress has pretty good search capabilities, so as I grab these snippets, more and more of the international artists will be searchable here.

AirCheck 120101 (Worksheet)

Written by jeremy on Tuesday, 1 of December , 2009 at 2:15 pm

OK, I’ll be honest here… this is more for me than you.  Every week when I prep AirCheck, my Tuesday night world hits show, I go through so many charts and wikis that I often can’t remember where I found info about an artist, or to whom it related.  Creeping CRS.  😉  So i’m going to try it this way, using the OzBlog and ScribeFire to pull together the info behind my AirCheck show. We’ll see how it works.

Whirled Hits with Jeremy

Written by jeremy on Friday, 27 of November , 2009 at 11:26 pm

I’ve always thought that what a country listens to on the radio or in the clubs or on their iPods says a lot about the culture that you won’t find if you only dig into its ethnic music. I guess you could call me a cultural pop musicologist.

As such, I’ve been following the world charts since the 70’s, but only recently has the internet made it possible to actually put together a live, real-time chart hits show, drawn every week from the charts of the world and presented while the chart rankings are still current. Every week when I research the show, I check multiple sources to find out about the international artists we play. I can be a bit forgetful (creeping CRS) so I often do it more than once. Now, I’ll just ScribeFire it onto this blog, which will both make it easier on my poor aching mind and provide the resources and research to the web-wide world.

So this blog will hold be clips about artists, pieces of charts, music resources, stuff like that. Sometimes there will even be a playlist. 😉

Catch Whirled Hits Tuesday afternoons from 3-6pm on Ozcat Radio.

It’s All About the Music

Written by jeremy on Friday, 20 of November , 2009 at 2:43 pm

Hello, my name is Jeremy and I’m a radio junkie.  Welcome to my Ozcat Radio blog and web pages.

I know… you’re thinking . o O (So wait… who is this guy?) Briefly, I went into radio directly out of college, and stayed there for 25 years, until the Communications Act of 1996 turned the corporados loose on it. There had always been a Corporadio presence, but up until then, it had been possible to make it with an independent, creative FM. When the Clear Channels of the world killed that, I decided to leave while I still loved the medium.

After a decade in computer multimedia, I ran into Ozcat Radio and hopped aboard.  It’s perfect:  I love all kinds of music and Ozcat plays all kinds of music.  My Saturday night show is a nod back to my progressive roots.  It’s absolutely free-form, and lets me mix anything I can work in (and I can work in a lot).  It’s my playtime show, because my Tuesday night show, AirCheck, is our World Hits show, and it’s prep-intensive.  Every week it takes me two days to prepare, but hey… it’s my passion.

You see, I truly believe that music is a universal language. If you understand the words to a song, all the better, but if you don’t, you can still love the beat, the melody, the feel of the song, the performance, the production and the myriad of things it says about its culture of origin.

When the Internet first made it possible to sit in a chat with people from 15 different countries in real time. I instantly thought . o O (Finally! It’s only a matter of time now before it’s possible to do a good world hits radio show!) That matter of time turned out to be about a decade. 😉
