AirCheck 10 May, 2011: Eurovision 2011

3-6PM PDT Tuesday 10 May 2011

Today is the first semi-final in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, the monumental 43 country pop song contest (Idol on steroids), so I’m devoting this show to the entries. The winner last year was Germany’s Lena Meyer-Landrut, so Germany hosts this year’s finals. There are two semi-finals and a final, with the winner chosen by popular vote immediately after the final. This year they are being contested live in Düsseldorf, Germany on May 10, 12 and 14.  Here’s a brief history of the contest:

In 1955, the EBU came up with the idea of an international song contest whereby countries, represeted by their respective public broadcasters, would participate in one television show, to be transmitted simultaneously in all represented nations. The competition was based upon the Italian Festival di Sanremo, held for the first time in 1951, and was also seen as a technological experiment in live television: In those days, it was a very ambitious project to join many countries together in a wide-area international network. Satellite television did not exist yet at that time, and the Eurovision Network comprised a terrestrial microwave network. Le Grand-Prix Eurovision de la Chanson Européenne was born.

Without interruption, the Eurovision Song Contest has been broadcast every year since 1956, which makes it one of the longest-running television programmes in the world.  In 2008, the contest comprised a record 43 represented countries, as Azerbaijan and San Marino joined the family.

The competition has been broadcast throughout Europe, but also in Australia, Canada, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Jordan, Korea, New Zealand and the United States, even though these countries do not participate.

On AirCheck today, I’ll playing the entered songs in the order they play in the live shows.  This order was chosen by a complicated lottery with weighted numbers of entries.

Here are the countries, artists and entries for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest from the Eurovision site including the links to the performer info pages:
